Dates

The Fair Trade Department markets the
Medjoul dates, the finest kind of dates, which comes from Palestinian
farmers in Jericho area. This kind of dates is marketed for the
benefit of farmers in cooperation with the Palm Farmers Cooperative
in Jericho.
The supervision staff in the Fair Trade Department makes repetitive
visits to the palm farms and provide the farmers with consultations
around how to pick dates and prepare the product to be sent to the
filling station in Jericho city. The staff usually recommends that
the farmers cover the dates before maturity with plastic bags to
protect the fruits from insects and birds and to prevent their fall
on the ground.
The farmers later undertake a process of initial
sorting for dates where they get rid of ruined or immature fruits
and send the product to the filling station in Jericho in plastic
boxes. Another process of sorting is also made in the station where
the dates with appropriate humidity level go to the processing while
the dates with inappropriate level of humidity are dried until they
reach the suitable level.
The last step is to sort the dates into two classes (A&B) and
keep them in refrigerators under 4 Celsius degrees after they get
packaged in 1 kg and 5 kg packets.
